Remembering Carolyn ‘Rusty’ Abdalla

Carolyn Gray Abdalla (Rusty) will be remembered by her welcoming smile, genuine interest in people and beautiful spirit.  She was a longtime member of the Florida Storytelling Association and was frequently found on the Front Porch at the annual Festival.

She also made several appearances on the main stage as part of the Member Showcase.  Carolyn was also a staunch supporter of the Storytellers of Central Florida guild, and she, along with her husband, Pete, helped to set up a new Mount Dora guild.

Carol “Rusty” Abdalla

As a storyteller her tales would draw you in and make you smile.  She volunteered in elementary schools in Seminole County to encourage children to read, and in turn, tell their stories.

Born in Evergreen, South Carolina, she grew up in Hopewell Virginia, and went on to earn a master’s degree at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

She was a Girl Scout leader, high school biology teacher and served as the President of the Florida Native Plant Society, Tarflower chapter, in Orlando.  She was also a talented seamstress, award-winning quilter, lifelong birder and avid gardener.

She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Pete, children Jerry and Ann, and six grandchildren: Leah, Calvin, Peter, Jacey, Luke and Cassidy.  Her family was the world to her and she will be greatly missed.

A celebration of life was held at Saint Matthew’s Church, Orlando, on Saturday, July 16th, 2022.
