As a holistic doctor, I believe that medicine is anything that heals you on the level of body, mind, emotions, and spirit. As a performing artist of oral stories, I know that stories are powerful medicine.
- Spiritual healing: Stories can inspire us! enliven us! breathe new energy into us!
- Emotional healing: Stories can help us process emotions by allowing us to feel them in a safe space.
- Mental healing: Stories can open us to new possibilities and allow us to escape our limiting beliefs.
- Physical healing: Stories can change behavior, stimulate new habits, and create physical changes in life.
The topic of “Storytelling as Healing” is rich in themes. There is healing in telling your story by finding meaning and discovering that you are not alone. There is healing in being listened to and listening to others. On the level of community, stories bring us together as we enter into the shared experience of story.
